It is famed as South Asia’s ancient health care system based on herbs and diet. Ayurveda sees health and disease in holistic terms. It takes into account the relationship between energy and matter. This system of healing believes in treatment of not just the part affected by disease but the individual as a whole. It emphasizes on the harmony of mind, body and spirit to cure diseases.
Poorva Karma
Poorva karma is derived from the words Poorva (Foremost) and Karma (Action). It is the first set of actions that are taken ahead of a Panchakarma therapy, and lasts for three to seven days. At this stage the body is prepared for treatment by loosening toxins and excess doshas.
Pradhana Karma
Pradhanakarma, or 'Main Action', is the stage after Purvakarma (preparatory treatment) during which the toxins are purged, and the body is healed. Pradhanakarma is started only when the time is right to extract the vitiated doshas. The patient has to follow a specific diet for the entire duration of treatment.
Paschat Karma
Paschat karma means after care. In this, certain precautions are taken after finishing the main procedures to get the full benefit of Panchakarma. It includes certain rejuvenating treatments and Rasayan therapy, lifestyle management, diet management, intake of herbal supplements etc.
Shamana Karma
Shamana revitalizes the body by treating imbalances and neutralizing any impurities that remain after detoxification. It is a healing treatment.
Kshudra Karma
Kshudra Karma is treatment for kshudra kushta. Ayurvedic treatises have advocated the use of various procedures to treat the Kshudra rogas.
Deepana Karma
The diet or medicine or process which stimulates digestion is called ‘deepana’. It is worthy to note the difference between deepana and pachana. Deepana process stimulates digestion at a primary level. Where as pachana process additionally stimulates metabolism too.
